Austenitic valve steels are precipitation hardenable. This feature provides good resistance to corrosive attacks, even at high temperatures, such as within engine exhaust gases. They have also proved outstanding resistance to wear and to thermal and mechanical shocks. As a result, they are used in the manufacture of internal combustion engine valves.

Among Villares Metals' austenitic valve steels, the following are noteworthy:

N4873

Cr-Ni-Si-W steel with good mechanical properties and high resistance to hot corrosion. Suitable for medium-duty engines.

VV33

Precipitation-hardenable austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese steel, with addition of nitrogen for increased high-temperature resistance. Suitable for exhaust valves used in heavy-duty diesel engines.

VV50

Precipitation-hardenable nitrogenous austenitic nickel-chromium-manganese steel, with Nb and W added for increased mechanical strength at high temperatures. Suitable for exhaust valves used in extra heavy duty engines.

VV53

Precipitation-hardenable austenitic steel, with addition of nitrogen for increased high-temperature resistance. Suitable for exhaust valves used in heavy-duty engines working at temperatures up to 800°C.

VV56

Precipitation-hardenable austenitic steel, suitable for exhaust valves used in heavy-duty engines working at temperatures up to 780°C.
