Villares Metals has its line of Super Duplex Stainless Steels for Oil and Gas qualified by the NORSOK standards.
Sumaré, April 19, 2010 - Villares Metals has just been certified by the NORSOK Standards, through the renown Teknologisk Institutt of Norway, as a qualified manufacturer of Super Duplex stainless steels, in compliance with the M650 Standard Revision 3. The NORSOK standards were developed by the Norwegian oil segment industries to normalize and ensure minimum requirements for this application Field.
This certification, which was granted last March 23rd, testifies that Villares Metals is qualified to supply the UNS S 32760, UNS S 32550 and UNS S 31803 Super Duplex steels, also known as grades 4501, 4507 and 4462, respectively, in diameters of up to 6 inches, including the whole manufacturing process via rolling. These steels were developed to present high mechanical properties coupled to an excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chloride containing media, as found in offshore applications in oil exploration.
It is also noteworthy to emphasize that in October 2009, the Villares Metals’ Management System had already been audited and approved by the NORSOK M-650 Revision 3 standard, complying with all necessary procedures, as well as the personnel and equipment qualification to manufacture the above mentioned grades.
Qualifying encompassed the development of the alloy manufacturing, carried out through the VOD process and all the evaluation procedures aiming at meeting the most stringent specifications of the Norwegian authority, which is internationally recognized by the Oil and Gas industry.
According to the Commercial Director, Mr. Herwig Petschenig, this certification places Villares Metals within a few world qualified manufacturers of these materials, which are of paramount importance for the pre-salt layer exploration in the Santos basin. “The next step of the development, already in progress, is to obtain the certification for bars with diameters up to 12 inches”, he concluded.
Messier-Dowty Qualifying
Villares Metals has been granted the aeronautical steel qualification by Messier-Dowty, a world leader in landing gear systems.
The French company Messier-Dowty, world leader in design, development, manufacturing and servicing of landing gear systems, has just finished qualifying the Villares Metals’ aeronautical steels 300M (V300MQA) and 4340 (VM40QA).
The qualification is valid for the whole SAFRAN Group, an international high technology organization that works in the aerospace propulsion sectors, aerospace and defense security equipment, of which Messier-Dowty is part of, and that includes materials for machinery and for forged parts with diameters of up to 295mm for the 300M classes per MTL 1201 issue 4 and for the steel grades in which the material specifications do not demand fatigue properties.
Messier-Dowty is present in more than 20,500 aircrafts that carry out over 35,000 daily landings all over the world, supplies materials to 33 structure manufacturers and provides services to more than 3,000 companies that operate regular commercial aircrafts, regional and commercial aircrafts, military aircrafts and helicopters.
Villares Metals, the largest specialty and high alloy steel manufacturer in Latin America, has started the manufacturing of aeronautical steels in 2005 and has also been qualified by Embraer. In order to work with this stringent Aerospatial Sector, Villares Metals also had to be ISO 15100 (AS9100) certified and was also granted the NADCAP accreditation for US. GQP/SQF Heat Treatments and Controls.
NADCAP
Villares Metals was granted the NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation-Program) accreditation.
Villares Metals became the first steel bar and specialty steel bar supplier in South America to be granted the NADCAP Accreditation, which will enable Villares Metals to work with the most important aerospace companies of the world.
NADCAP is run by the non-profit organization Performance Review Institute (PRI). According to PRI, NADCAP is a quality standard of a very high level, introduced by the largest aerospace manufacturers such as Airbus, Boeing, Rolls Royce, Safran, Goodrich.
Above the ISO 9000/AS9100 Certifications, the NADCAP Accreditation is considered as the highest approval level for a quality supplier for the aerospace and military industries. In practice, it is a pre-requirement for suppliers to the aerospace industry.

Stainless Steel in Rio de Janeiro - Inox 2010 (Stainless 2010) | 10th Brazilian Seminar on Stainless Steel– International Edition | Focus on Oil and Gas |
20 to 22 September 2010, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
The Brazilian Seminar on Stainless Steel, in its 10th edition will be carried out in Rio de Janeiro, in the first week after the largest event of the oil and gas industry in Latin America, Rio Oil & Gas Expo and Conference. Due to the recent mammoth discovery of oil reservoirs in the so called pre-salt layer, near Rio, it is our intention to concentrate our efforts for the next Seminar in themes related to oil and gas, but not exclusively.
Since its first edition in 1988, the Seminar has contributed towards building a Brazilian Forum on Stainless Steel. This international edition is an excellent opportunity for the national and foreign specialist to get across and discuss issues associated with stainless steel, technology and innovations.
The conference is organized by the Núcleo Inox (Stainless Nucleus) and supported by the Brazilian supply chain of stainless steel.
